Plymouth To Dakar Rally

Cathy Clayton has recently received an update, incuding some of the photos above, from her son Paul on his journey to Dakar. Mom and Dad were very relieved to see them as Paul had not been able to contact them for about 5 days (no signal in the desert!)

As you can see from the photos, they have passed the Tropic of Cancer and were going to be crossing the border into Mauritania on Monday, 17th. October. Apparently, when they went through the Western Sahara last week, they had bumped in to the British Army on desert training!

Looks like Paul hasn't shaved since he left home - Mom says she was told that this is his "travelling beard"!

Click here to find out how Cathy Clayton's son Paul is crossing a desert to Dakar to raise money for type 1 diabetes research.

Haiti Hurricane Appeal

Dear Friends,

You will have seen in recent days the appalling scenes of devastation in Haiti caused by Hurricane Matthew.

An already impoverished community has been left an appalling state, with loss of life, livelihoods, homes and hospitals. There is recent news from our Mission Partners Sharon and John Harbottle on the Methodist Church website, describing the damage to the island and relief efforts currently taking place.

We are  all urged to pray for the people of the island, and also to give what we can to the appeal launched by the Methodist Church. The World Mission Fund is aiming to raise £15,000 for urgent relief work, and already the total is nearly £10,000.

I ask each church in the Telford Circuit to consider giving what they can to this appeal.

Donations can be made online via the Methodist Church website.

Yours in Christ

Rev. Kate Cook

Superintendent Minister

Telford Circuit

Celebrating Hadley's 150 Years

You may already have seen the latest edition of Wrekin News and read the article 'Celebrating 150 years of faith and worship at Hadley Methodist Church'.   If not, get hold of a copy. They are distributed freely through many local retailers.

The article includes a couple of photographs that are in stark contrast with today's expectations.

There was opportunity to view similar photographs on Saturday 8th October, 2.00pm - 5.00pm when the exhibition, 'A History of Hadley Methodist Church in Photographs' was on display at the church.

Well, did you go?

What a fascinating exhibition of photographs and scrumptious cream tea!!

Plenty of people turned up at Hadley Methodist Church on Saturday to see a display of photographs reflecting the history of both Hadley and the Hadley Methodist Church. Conversation over cream teas inevitably recalled past times with people exchanging and comparing their memories of events gone by.

Trinity Harvest Festival 2016

Pause Stop Previous Next View full-sized photos

Congratulations to the people involved in preparation and delivery of the Harvest Festival at Trinity, particularly the young people from Say Yes 50p Club whose participation was much appreciated. The church looked splendid with all the flowers and garden produce.

It was a brave decision to go with the idea of a 'brunch' in the service but everybody seemed to enjoy it. The inclusion of guest speaker Rachel Cooper from Village Water was a timely reminder that many people will never sit down to such a feast. Without intervention such as that organised by Village Water life for many people in many parts of the world is shortened dramatically by disease that can be prevented.

The collection at today's service will go to support the efforts of Village Water.

The food offerings will be distributed to local food banks and to Shifnal people in need of support.

If you would like to learn more about village water click here to visit their website.

From Your Minister

Dear Friends,

Warm Christian greeting.

“Consider how the lilies grow.  They do not labour or spin.  Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all His splendour was dressed like one of these.”                                                                   Luke 12:27

I felt as though, winter started for me on the 1st September when we got back from Malaysia.  The temperature there was 36 degrees Celsius.  At the airport, people were walking with only their T-shirts while we had to pull out our jumpers from the suitcase.

Over the past month things got back to normal.

October is a month of climate change as our minds focus on Harvest Festival weekend.Last week, I visited Attingham Park.   The streets around us were filled with autumn leaves and gardens have an unkempt appearance. In spite of all the mess on the ground, when I looked up it was an amazing sight where the leaves were green, yellow, orange, red and brown. The rays of the sun shining through the trees were splendid.  I felt as though I was moving through the Cathedral of nature.  It was truly a  brilliant sight that I could see the Glory of the Creator in His creation. There is a phenomenal change between the mess on the ground and the Glory in the sky.I was instantly reminded that there are many times we look at the mess on the ground and get discouraged, rather than looking up at the trees and seeing God’s Glory and be encouraged. Autumn is a time of great inspiration.

As we celebrate Harvest and autumn, may we acknowledge the Creator of the universe who is also the Creator of the human body, which is part of the wonder of His creation. As we praise and thank God for the earth and it’s resources, whatever our physical limitation and frailties, may we celebrate the amazing, complex and intricate God for creating us in His own image.

Every blessing,

Hendry Ponniah

Happy Birthday Les

Conratulations to Les Cherrington who celebrated his 98th birthday on Thursday.

Les got an early birthday present when he attended Staffordshire Yeomanry QORR OCA group Annual Lunch.

Chairman, Col David Leigh, presented WW2 Staffordshire Yeoman, Mr Leslie Cherrington with a photograph of Capt Tom Gardner and a group of Yeomen in the Western Desert in late 1942 for his 98th Birthday which is on the 20th October.

At the time the presentation picture was taken Les Cherrington was serving as a Tank gunner with A Sqn Staffs Yeo.

Happy Birthday Sheila

Shelia Pendrey enjoys her birthday with friends at Coffee Morning

There was a large crowd at Coffee Morning on Wednesday 19th October making a special effort to support the StarCross Theatre Group.

Members were busy preparing stalls and selling things but had not forgotten that the day was also the birthday of one of our senior members Sheila Pendrey.

So when Sheila arrived to join her friends for coffee there was a rousing chorus of "Happy Birthday" to welcome her.

Congratulations Sheila and may there be many more birthdays to celebrate.

New Superintendent Of The Telford Circuit

I’ve been asked to write a little bit about myself for the Shifnal website. It’s quite difficult to know

where to begin, but here goes….

Dennis and I have settled well into life at Bridgnorth since moving there last August. Dennis has just retired,
having spent most of his working life in IT. Our elder daughter Rachel lives and works in London, and  our younger daughter Emma live and works in  Leicestershire, which is where our family home is, and where I have lived for most of my life.

Before training for the ministry at Wesley House, Cambridge,  I had spent all my working life in music—as a teacher and as a performer.  As a singer I worked across the UK, in Europe, North and South America, in some amazing venues and met some amazing  people.

In whatever free time I have I love reading, cooking, cinema, theatre and watching cricket!

My call to the ministry came quite out of the blue and was something I struggled with for some time.      However, I find my life in ministry the most challenging  and yet fulfilling experience, and God never fails to surprise me with his patience, his grace and his detailed knowledge of what I need and when I need it.  I have learnt that God works most in us when we are at  our most vulnerable, because that is when we learn what depending on God is all about.

Becoming Superintendent of the Telford Circuit is an enormous privilege.—one I neither sought nor        expected.  I hope to make the circuit a bit more  connected, so that we can encourage one another, and support one another better. I am aware we face huge challenges in the year ahead. I will not have all the answers, but I am so glad that we worship the One  Who Does!
